Owners description:

Big Block powered Pursuit Special Interceptor Replica.

The starting point for this my second replica came about firstly after I decided that I again wanted a replica and secondly after Grant and I calculated the mathematical cost of constructing a replica using a big block engine.

Given that I was funding the project myself it was more economically plausible to take the required time and find a base car that already had all the required hardware in situ.

My problem was that such cars are not common.

I spent almost a year looking but eventually I found an XA coupe that had been involved in Drag Racing for many years. This base car had not been road registered for over 15 years, thus as a non-licensed vehicle its total life over the last 15 years had been spent sitting in a shed waiting for its short distance motor sport events.

As we found the coupe it carried twin predator carburetors and a high-rise Weiand inlet manifold. The big 460 had lost oil pressure at idle and it was this loss of oil pressure that had now motivated the owner to sell the vehicle. And so the engine needed a rebuild.

Being the earlier model XA coupe the new base car was not correct in either front panels or  doors for a replica.

Even so I laid down my money and the new base car was towed home.

I never thought it then, but as things turned out the car would not run again for over three years.

With Grant involved in our other commercial activities the engine build was entrusted to Graham Dowding. It was also Graham who built the 351 for my first replica. In his heart Graham is a Ford big block lover so the build up was in safe hands. Graham stripped the engine to the block and effectively started the build up again. The block was hot tanked and the build got under way. I had located a set of Cobra Jet rods (from another drag racer), the forged pistons I had purchased new about a year before. We stayed with the base cars previous drag cam, it is a high lift (630 lift) high performance solid cam.

The cylinder heads had seen much development already; never the less we had them rebuilt with the correct springs and pressures to match the cam.

The inlet manifold is now a Victor 460, the drag race twin predators were sold and a single 850 cfm Barry Grant double pumper went on the top. To get the exhaust gas out I retained the previous extractor system but to assist with under hood heat control I had the system ceramic coated. Down stream of the headers we have the traditional replica spaghetti like exhaust system feeding all 8 side pipe outlets

To deliver the fuel without any fear of a lean out I went for a 220 GPH Barry Grant electric pump, this Barry Grant pump will ensure that the fuel pressure is maintained even under prolonged high speed situations.

Had the Movie world car been in a real life situation it would have been high speed long runs of wide open throttle that it would have been designed for. So this replica has been constructed applying that very same logic.

The big 460 in the base car was fitted with an old twin point distributor, such an item was seriously and strangly limiting for the previous ¼ mile application, so we went with the new style Crane electronic ignition system and the attached hi-6 spark box.

With the kind of horse power and torque that we would be developing a standard “top loader” gear box would be struggling to cope. So we left the fully manual C6 in position the C6 is strong enough and should do the job for years with out a drama.

But new to autos I had some learning to do. We tossed away the shifter that it had and fitted a B&M shifter that Grant had sitting around.

The shifting of this C6 is a full manual operation, so at least I am still “driving” in terms of gear shifting. I found that in reality that the car is in fact more demanding to drive than my preferred three pedal set-up, particularly to and old school clutch and 4 cog box guy like myself.

The rear diff of the base car was naturally a drag application 4:11 and it was mini spooled, so it was not really what we wanted, as such it was removed and sold. We switched the diff ratio to a high ratio 2.75 LSD. So very obviously we were looking for top end performance and high cruising speeds.

The fuel storage is by means of a Ford GT long range tank, so we have 120 liters of guzzolene available for the thirsty big block.

The false blower in terms of the castings is the same as the other replicas that we have done. The variation is in the method that we have employed to drive the false blower operation. Because of the huge physical engine size connected with the big block engine we were not able to fit the drive motor into the blower case as was done on the Japan replica. So for this replica we returned to the external belt drive system.  Also with the bigger engine I had to re-think the blower mounting bracket system.

The interior is much like all the MAD MAX pursuit special interceptor replicas that we build, the head lining has been returned to the factory bone color, the interior trim was replaced, and the carpet renewed. With the C6 auto shift in position I wanted to retain the stock look of the standard console and to achieve this we fitted a somewhat modified version of the standard floor console

The roof console is the same Grant Hodgson design that we use in all our replicas.

To remain true to the film car we installed the genuine Police Siren, in fact as this was my own replica the siren provider (and supplier to the WA Police service) volunteered to fit the siren free of charge, so it is a true Police installation.

Due to the awesome performance potential we fitted a set of 11 inch disk rotors and dual piston calipers up the front, so at least we have some chance of hauling the big car back from its high top end speed. The Factory disk brakes were retained at the rear and the customary reproduction Ford traction bars went on as well.

As a package this pursuit special replica has it all, power to burn, much as you want.

But more importantly the tru-blu Mad Max Interceptor jaw dropping, show stopping, custom body work.

Pipes out the side, blower out the hood, spoilers, flares, fat tires has there even been a more balanced or greater muscle car package?
