1972 XA Ford Coupe SOLD!

This is one coupe that was built with no regard for either dollars or time, as the owner spent a solid year and scavenged 6 other coupes for the parts inventory that created this pristine XA coupe. The XA was the first of the big Mad Max type coupes, and as such it has many devoted followers not only in it's home land, but around the world as well.

For the build-up of this coupe, the body shell was totally stripped , with not a bolt, washer or clip in sight. The empty body shell was shipped off for a full sand blast, inside and out, all hanging panels were removed and blasted along with the main body shell. Six months later, a straight and freshly painted shell emerged in magnificent Ford Monza red. The coupe was as straight as a die, proving that there is no substitute for care and attention to detail. Over the next 3 months the rest of the parts were cleaned, painted and re-assembled. The interior was re-trimmed in basic 1970's era black and as close as possible to standard XA configuration.

At the business end is a 4V 351 Cleveland which sounds as grumpy as a street car should be thanks to the big Crane solid stick. The ported heads run BRC roller rockers with genuine Aussie HO guide plates and pushrods. Deep down inside the 4MA crank sits and above are standard rods with TRW forged pistons. A high energy pan allows a bit more room for oil and it sits under a windage tray, which is designed to achieve less oil drag on the crank. Fuel delivery is straight from the USA with a Holley 800 Double-pumper on an Edelbrock Torker manifold. Then just in case this coupe finds Mad Max in the mirrors, there is the Madden Nitrous base plate system. There is nothing like nitrous to ensure that when MAX pulls the red button, he knows he is in a chase. As for ignition, this beast is up to the task, and carries an MSD 6 AL Mallory Comp 9000 distributor and Accel super coil .

To keep the Red Vs Black race even through the shifts, the big red Aussie coupe carries the toploader 4-speed gear box, just as Max's black monster did. To keep the power hooked up, the coupe received a Hays 11" clutch and a Mr. Gasket shifter for faster gear shifting.

Our mate Mad Max will need to pull the red button early in this pursuit, as unlike Max's black beast (with its 3:00 to 1 diff) this coupe gets up real early with Ford's super-tough 9 inch 4.11 LSD diff. So this is a 12 second car even without the NOS. Large GT drums were fitted to the rear and new standard discs up front. Because of the cam overlap at low RPM, engine vacuum is quite low, and this also meant fitting an Aussie HO style vacuum reservoir to keep the brakes boosted at all times. To get the fat and low look that has stamped "Muscle Car Heritage" onto this Aussie legend, the coupe is fitted with Centerline Auto Drag rims measuring 15 X 10 at the rear and 15 X 5 up front.

When this coupe finished the rebuild and went back onto the road almost 10 years ago, it immediately attracted the attention of the local Police units. In fact in Australia even Policeman Max Rockatansky would hang his head in shame at the nonsence road laws that we live under. Archaic Australian laws hounded the coupe, and the Police applied defect sticker after defect sticker ("defect" equals, tiers to wide, engine to loud, car to low, car to fast!). After the sixth road side interview and the sixth "defect" sticker the frustrated owner parked his pride and joy under the covers. Locked away from the world the coupe sat for 8 years, knowing only the engine warming fire up and sneaky late night drive every few months or so.

Those 8 years past quickly, and the owner again returned the coupe to the road, but the law has a long memory, and the Australian road regulations are much tougher on vehicles than the US regulations. In Australia anything apart from stock is quickly pursued by the law enforcement teams who never ever get tired of their work. So in Australia this big powerful Coupe is an outlaw car. The proud owner thought that rather than dismember this immaculate vehicle to suit the crazy Australian law he would contact us and asked if we could assist with placing his vehicle into American hands where it can be driven as freely as the owner intended.

So that is where we come in, an inspection of the coupe revealed that it could not even be built today for the parts value alone of the "for sale" asking price. How much is this custom and very fast Australian Muscle Car Legend?
